NASCAR Legend Pee Wee Jones Is Remembered
|
by Skip Wall
He looked out over the crowd at the historic Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston Salem earlier last summer, and pondered his thoughts.
Did he wish to be out there? Pee Wee Jones, former six time Bowman Gray Stadium Modified Champ, would give you a sheepish grin and say "no and if I were younger, I would still say no."
Pee Wee passed away peacefully on Christmas eve at his home in Clemmons NC at the age of 80.
Pee Wee, born Phillip Sylvester Jones, was a legend in the world of NASCAR. He was one of the original members of NASCAR when it was founded in 1949 by big Bill France. He began his career run...

Joey Coulter Beats the Best at Southern National
|
Huntersville, N.C., December 10, 2008 - Joey Coulter beat the best Late Model Stock Car competitors in the Carolinas and Virginia when he drove his Tempest Cycles/Darrell Gwynn Foundation Chevrolet to victory in the Dec. 7 running of the Thanksgiving Classic at North Carolina’s Southern National Raceway Park.
The 200-lap, $10,000-to-win race marks the first major Late Model win in the 18-year-old Florida native’s career. Coulter qualified eighth among the 33 starters.
“The car was really, really good,” Coulter said. “Randy (Renfrow, crew chief) had an awesome setup. We didn’t get the qualifying run we wanted, but the car was fast. In the first half we just tried to stay out of trouble and see what we had.”

Clay Rogers On Pole For Seneca 250
|
MYRTLE BEACH -- Clay Rogers knows how to get around Myrtle Beach Speedway, winning twice here in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series.
And Rogers may have the Late Model stock car to beat today in the Seneca 250. Rogers edged out Jamey Caudill by .003 of a second to win the pole for today's 250-lap event.
"I knew the car was good, but didn't know it was that good," said Rogers, the two-time Pro Cup Series champion. "That really surprised me. I was really happy the way it drove in race trim, but didn't think we'd qualify like that."
Rogers, who swept the Pro Cup races at Myrtle Beach in 2006, believes he can use the same strategy today that he relied on for his Pro Cup success here.
"We just need to stay in the top fou...

|
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 13, 2008) – Austin Dillon had a nearly perfect season: He was the top rookie in the NASCAR Camping World Series East, won his first NASCAR race and nearly knocked off series veteran Matt Kobyluck for the series championship.
The 18-year-old from Lewisville, N.C., now has his sights set on the biggest race of the NASCAR short-track racing calendar: The NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. Thursday, Dillon joined Kobyluck as drivers to officially commit to running ‘the Daytona 500 of short-track racing.’
Dillon is scheduled to head out to California the first week of January to test at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale in a...

by Skip Wall Exiting the track at Concord Motorsports Park, one could see Burt Myers, winner of the North-South Shootout, with the trophy on one arm and his lovely wife on the other along with this big sheepish grin. Burt Myers looked like someone who should be a champion. After all he just beat his northern co-horts in a race of the best of the best in modified racing, a feat in six years of tries, that no southerner had done before.
But Myers, like many others, races in the lesser known series (Whelen Southern Modified Tour) under the NASCAR banner. He also races in the lesser known ASA Modified Series.
With the popularity of the Sprint Cup Series, is this series considered too boring or not appreciated? Why don...

Myers Gets Revenge In North-South Shootout
|
by Skip Wall Earlier in September, Burt Myers won a big race in Martinsville, a modified race showdown against his northern counterparts. That was something that no southern driver had done since 1985.
Only days later that win was taken away when officials declared that Myers had an illegal engine.
Myers got redemption this past weekend when once again the northern and southern drivers got together for the season ending North-South Shootout at Concord Motorsports Park.
Myers of Walnut Cove NC took the lead from Matt Hirschman with only four laps left in the 125 lap event.
"This is one win they wont take away from m...

ASA Modified Race at Hickory Cancelled
|
Officials of the American Speed Association sanctioned Southern Modified Race Tour announced cancellation of the “Chiller 150” scheduled for November 1st at History Motor Speedway.
“It is with much regret I had to cancel this event” said SMRT Director, Randy Myers. “We felt we had adequate sponsorship to make the season ending event happen but I received a call this morning from the primary sponsor that they would not be able to follow through with the sponsorship for the event. The downturn in the economy and the resulting slide of stocks on Wall Street have hit a lot of people hard and the sponsor was one of those suffering badly du...

Reitenour Wins Race While Rival Miller Wins Championship
|
by Skip Wall If you attended Sunday’s race at Hickory Motor Speedway for only 10.00 you got a bargain. If you didn’t attend the race you missed one heck of a race.
Ryan Miller and Megan Reitenour waged a fierce battle all year in the Super Cup Stock Car Series Championship battle. They closed out the season with another tough tussle in the Extreme Trophies 100 with only 32 points separating them, and Reitenour came away with the win and Miller taking the championship by less than ten points.
Miller, who came into the event needing only to finish three positions behind Reitenour or better to secure the title, was not content t...
